Clay Stabilizers

CLAY STABILIZERS

Potassium Chloride (KCl) and quartenary ammonium salts such as Choline Chloride and Tetramethylammonium Chloride are often used to control clay swelling in oilfield and fracking applications.

Choline Chloride

CAS Number: 67-48-1

Tetramethylammonium Chloride

CAS Number: 75-57-0

Laboratory test using Woodford Shale show that new clay stabilizing salts based on Dytek® HMD and Dytek® A can achieve similar or better performance than choline chloride at loading rates that are less than or comparable to that of choline chloride.

Dytek® HMD

1,6-Hexanediamine, hydrochloride (1:2) CAS Number: 6055-52-3

Dytek® A

2-methyl-1,5-pentamethylenediamaine, hydrochloride (1:2) CAS Number: 34813-63-3

Starting formulation recommendations

  • Begin initial testing at 2 gpt of 40 wt% DYTEK® diamine salt solutions, then adjust as needed
  • Testing in final formulation to ensure compatibility and performance
  • Testing on specific shale for desired result
